Broken Hill Hanger

In 2022, the Uniting Church’s Flying Patrol Centre airport Hanger sustained a fire causing damage to the full interior of the building. We were engaged by our Insurance Client to complete remedial and repair works to the interior and exterior of the hanger, including full roof and cladding replacement along with structural steel works.

As a working hanger within a live airport environment, it was imperative that we accommodated the airport and owners of numerous helicopters and planes using the hanger, while ensuring the safety of personnel and our site teams.

Services Provided

  • Anti-contamination of all wall insulation, roofing and interior fit out prior to construction commencing
  • Full reconstruction of external cladding and roofing including removal and replacement of structural steel in Zones 1 & 2
  • Engagement of structural engineers
  • Complete electrical rewiring and upgrades
  • Painting of interior structural steel
  • Installation of new signage
  • Final pressure clean of concrete slabs to clean off old and excess oil

Outcome

The project was completed 2 weeks ahead of the estimated completion date and within an already compressed timeframe. We recognised that due to the complex, and hot rural nature of this project pre-planning and a pre-construction approach was needed to complete the works efficiently and with minimal disruption to the clients of this working hanger. To ensure the safety of personnel at the airport and our teams, we set up exclusion zones on a daily basis and installed roof railing and scissor lifts for at-height work.
